How to Find a Specific Photo on iPhone

By Srikanth V ·

Short answer

Open Photos, tap Search and type something in the picture, a place, a person's name or a date. To also search files, sizes and the text in documents with plain-English filters, use a search app such as Lookpix.

Search in the Photos app

The Photos app can search for things it recognises in your pictures, places, people you've named, dates and some text.

  1. 1Open Photos and tap Search.
  2. 2Type what you remember: “dog”, “Goa”, “March 2025” or a person's name.
  3. 3Pick a suggestion to narrow the results, or keep typing to combine words.

When the Photos app isn't enough

Photos searches only your photo library, not the PDFs and documents in the Files app. It also has no filters for size or file type, so “videos larger than 500 MB” or “PDFs from last month” aren't things you can ask it.

Search photos and files together with Lookpix

Lookpix searches your photo library and the folders you choose in Files at once. Type what you remember and it shows how it read your search, as filters for kind, date, size and source that you can change.

With Smarter Search, part of Lookpix Pro, you can describe a whole scene, like “red car at night”, and find photos nobody ever labelled.

  1. 1Install Lookpix and allow Photos (and Files, if you like).
  2. 2Type what you remember, like “beach last year” or “receipts from last month”.
  3. 3Tap a filter to change it, or sort the results by date or size.

Stop scrolling. Start finding.
